In December, the Canadian Airborne Regiment returned from a tour of peacekeeping duty in Cyprus that had witnessed the picturesque island torn apart by a new round of bitter fighting between the Greek and Turkish communities. This left the Turkish Army in control of nearly half of the island. As Field Marshall Montgomery said when describing Airborne soldiers "They are - in fact - men apart every man an Emperor".
